Since 1988, the IWRC has helped small businesses comply with federal and state environmental regulations. By incorporating on-site reviews, applied research, and hands-on training into its free and confidential assistance program, the IWRC offers complete compliance assistance that small businesses can understand and apply. SBAP contact, Dan Nickey, has conducted several workshops across the state to help businesses prepare Risk Management Plans. He also works with the IAEAP and conducts on-site reviews.

SBEAP provides guidance in compliance and technical matters to businesses that otherwise would not have access to such help because of financial constraints. SBEAP emphasizes assistance designed to diminish the burden of compliance and the SBEAP staff will work with you to implement pollution prevention practices such as material substitution, process optimization, waste minimization, and recycling. All services provided by the SBEAP are completely confidential, nonregulatory, and free. The SBEAP program is administered by the Pollution Prevention Institute (PPI) at Kansas State University for the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE).

The Small Business Assistance Program is divided into three major components: the Compliance Advisory Panel, the Ombudsman/Public Advocate, and the Assistance Program. In addition, the One-Stop Permit Assistance Program exists to serve as a clearinghouse for information related to the department's various permitting processes. The One-Stop Assistance Program coordinates activities with the Small Business Assistance Program, the Pollution Prevention Program and all regulatory programs in an attempt to address questions and concerns in a timely and comprehensive manner.
